Management of Fisheries Resources

Besides conservational measures, proper management strategy is adopted for the fishing, harvesting and uplift of the socio-economic conditions of fishermen communities etc. The following efforts are also made for the management of Fisheries resources

Lease of Fishing Rights of Public Water

Fishing rights in all public water areas including rivers, canals small dams & reservoirs etc. are leased out under prescribed terms and conditions through open auction under supervision of specially constituted committees comprising of members from local councils, Forest department and District administration.

Stock Replenishment of Public Waters

Stock replenishment is managed through salvage operations as well as direct stocking of fish seed from fish hatcheries.

Issuance of Licenses to Fishermen and Anglers

The department issues fishing licenses to the fishermen and amateur anglers on prescribed fees. 

The fee admissible for the different categories of licenses from 2016 follows as

  •  Provincial Rod and Line Rs. 1000/- per annum
  •  All kinds of gears Rs. 500/- per annum
  •  Cast net Rs. 200/- per annum
  •  Daily Rod and Line Rs. 50/- per day

Promotion of Sport Fishing

The department promotes sport fishing and every possible assistance and facilities are extended to the angler's associations in arranging angling competition at various levels.
  • No fishing without a license
  • Restrictions on mesh size of nets
  • Restriction on catching undersized fish
  • Preservation of fish against release of industrial effluents as well as pollutants
  • Salvage operations of natural resources
