Functions

The Punjab has an extensive expanse of fisheries resources with great potential. The major natural resources are Rivers, Canals, Reservoirs, Lakes, and Water Logged Areas etc. covering a total area of about 3 million hectares (7.5 million acres). Besides sustainable exploitation of natural resources, the fish culture activities in private sector have been considerably increased in the last two decades. At present about 61,000 acres have been brought under fish culture and more than 65% fish is coming from private fish farms.

The Foundation performs the following functions:

Extension

The department provides following extension services to the Prospective and Progressive Fish Farmers.

  • Free technical advisory services
  • Free of cost soil & water analysis
  • Provision of buldozer on sub-sidized rates
  • Provision of subsidized quality fish seed
  • Fish diesease diagnostic facilities & analysis
  • Capacity building through short training courses & field workshops
  • Online information on fisheries website, facebook page and youtube channel

Conservation

The conservation of this industry is preserved through the following means

  • Limits on mesh size and fish size
  • Observance of close fishing season (from 1st June to 31st August)
  • Protection against electric fishing 
  • Biodiversity conservation

The organization ensures the safety of the rights reserved by the government and public to allow the culture of successful fish farming in the country.
